CloseRev. Robert Recio -
Ruth (Ruth 1-4)
This Sunday we turn to the book of Ruth, the third woman mentioned in Matthew’s genealogy. Ruth is not only a distant relative of Jesus but anticipates his redemptive love as she enters into the life of Naomi to bring hope where there appears to be only hopelessness and darkness. In the end, Ruth is a fitting story for this time of year where we are reminded of the weight of life in this world of sin and death and the hope found in a baby born in Bethlehem.

It might seem strange to base a sermon series on the “begats.” The genealogies of so-and-so’s who begat so-and-so’s, but this advent season this is where we are turning our attention. In Matthew’s genealogy in Matthew 1, we have one of the most interesting list of names in the Bible. As Matthew makes the case that Jesus is profoundly connected to men like David and Abraham, he also sprinkles in the names of four women, that communicate just what kind of Messiah Jesus is.
