CloseRev. Robert Recio -
Laying the Groundwork (Matthew 23:1-12)
Sinfulness isn’t necessarily lawlessness; it’s a natural aversion to the righteous and good Law of God. Even while breaking God’s Law, we are good at crafting our own systems of righteousness to both vindicate and condemn ourselves and others. Jesus’ warnings in Matthew 23 deconstruct this law-based mentality in order to lay the groundwork for the kind of community that he is building. To be a grace-centered people with grace-centered homes and churches doesn’t mean we disregard God’s Law. It means that we center our lives on Jesus and his saving work.
