It’s Friday…But Sunday’s Comin’!

Happy Friday everyone!

Please help our good friends Scott and Crystal Moran move tomorrow. Gather at 25275 Corte Mandarina in Murrieta at 8AM for a cup of coffee and donut before loading the truck. We’ll unload at 27701 Murrieta Rd #136 in Menifee.

A huge thank-you to Meredith LaBonte, the adult and teen volunteers, and the kids who came to our Vacation Bible School this past week. Everyone survived the summer heat and learned a little bit more about the God who rescues his people through their study of the Book of Exodus. Please express your gratitude to Meredith and the others when you see her.

This coming week, we begin our weekly Tuesday communicants class. This class is designed for children who are entering 2nd grade through those who have completed the 5th grade. It is intended to help these children take another step toward making public profession of faith and being admitted to the Lord’s Supper. If your child is planning on attending, please be sure to send him or her with a Bible, a pencil, and a snack! The class will begin at 10 am and conclude by noon. Parents who want to help with “crowd control” are welcome to stay!

We’re continuing to collect shoes for International Christian Adoptions. All children’s sizes are needed. If you have any questions, please contact Mike DeWit.

I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday!
In Christ,
Eric Landry

UPDATED Community Discipleship Project

In January, we began a whole-church reading program that will take us through the Bible while also giving us an opportunity to memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Even if you have only read or memorized sporadically (or have not yet begun), you can pick up at any time with the readings for the day.

We printed off the original guides and updated second quarter reading schedule. From now on, we will post the schedules online for your convenience (and to save a few bucks in printing costs).

If only need the third quarter reading schedule (July through September), please click here: Third Quarter Reading Schedule.

If you need the entire guide, including helps for reading and praying as well as the updated third quarter reading schedule, please click here: 2015 CPC Community Discipleship Project.

Tongues: Verse by Verse

The sermon today will take up the difficult issue of the gift of tongues from 1 Corinthians 14. As I wrestled with this issue, I thought it might help if I created a chart that outlined each instance in the New Testament where the gift of tongues was referenced. Upon reviewing the chart, the session thought it might help some of you who would be interested in a more detailed study of the issue.

Please note the directions at the bottom of the chart: the chart may not be distributed or reproduced beyond the congregation of Christ Presbyterian Church without the church’s permission. For permission or more information, please send an email to info@christpca.net.

It’s Friday…But Sunday’s Comin’!

Happy Friday everyone!

Vacation Bible School begins NEXT week! Thank you to all of you who are working with Meredith LaBonte to minister to our kids and their friends. Please pray for the children who will attend and the adults/teens who will be working with them. If you have any questions, please contact Meredith.

As some of you have heard, Carol Avila’s mom had a stroke this week. She is recovering well, but along with the situation with Izzy’s dad, the Avilas have had a tough week! Please pray for Izzy’s dad’s continuing recovery and Carol’s mom’s recovery, as well.

We’re continuing to collect shoes for International Christian Adoptions. All children’s sizes are needed. Let’s try to move our “barometer” a little higher this week! If you have any questions, please contact Mike DeWit.

If you are anything like me, you have been glued to the news out of Charleston. Nine people murdered in their church during a Bible study. Four of them were pastors. Today the news reported that the assailant confessed and said he hoped to spark a race war. If you are looking for resources to help understand the big issues of race and ethnicity, I would recommend you listen to a recent presentation by Ligon Duncan (with responses by Carl Ellis and Brian Cosby) about the PCA and our complicity in the sin of racism. It’s long (more than an hour and half), but it gives some good context to the issues that our own denomination is facing now. You should also listen to or watch the conversation between John Piper, Tim Keller, and Anthony Bradley on “Race and the Christian.”

I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday!

In Christ,
Eric Landry

It’s Friday…But Sunday’s Comin’!

Happy Friday everyone!

This is the last week to register for Vacation Bible School! Please register online. Feel free to forward this link to friends or family who may also be interested in attending. If you have any questions, please contact Meredith LaBonte.

We’re a little more than half-way to our goal of 50 pairs of shoes for our shoe drive for International Christian Adoptions. All children’s sizes are needed. We’ll continue to collect shoes until we have reached our goal! If you have any questions, please contact Mike DeWit.

Last week, I asked you to pray for Izzy Avila’s dad. Here’s the latest update from Izzy: “We received the results from the bone marrow, which was to identify why my father’s blood platelet level was low. It was negative – nothing cancerous, as was the concern. In order to boost his platelet count, they are giving him steroid or cortizone type injections. He is doing as expected, progressing slowly but surely. Thank you again for your prayers!”

This last week was our denomination’s General Assembly, the yearly meeting of our church to take up issues of national concern. One of the “hot issues” this year was a personal resolution from two pastors asking our denomination to repent of our corporate sin in not supporting the efforts of the 1960s and 1970s toward Civil Rights and of our sin in actively resisting racial reconciliation then and now. Discussions around the issue lasted through the entire week and concluded late last night with a vote to send the Resolution to the presbyteries (the regional assemblies of the church) for further work, so that an even better resolution can be voted on at next year’s Assembly. After the vote, many men stayed in the assembly hall confessing their own personal sin related to this issue and engaging in a time of prayer for one another and for our church. I regret that I was not there to participate in and witness such an important occasion in the history of our church. Please take a moment to read the Resolution on Civil Rights Remembrance, which will be taken up again at the 2016 General Assembly.

I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday!

In Christ,
Eric Landry

Summer 2015 Communicants Class

Description

This weekly class will work together through Understanding the Faith: A Workbook for Communicants Classes by Stephen Smallman. Children entering 2nd grade through 5th grade are welcome to participate. Younger/older siblings may attend but parents should understand that the class is directed to a specific age group.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays at the Landry home. Each class will begin at 10:00 am. We will review the chapter that the children worked on at home. There will be a snack break. Then we will work on a chapter or two together or in small groups. We will finish each day by 12:00 pm.

Parents: please make sure that your child brings his/her workbook, a pencil, and a snack. Completing the workbook does not automatically lead to a child being admitted to the Lord’s Supper, but the elders have determined that this is one of the best ways to help a child prepare for that occasion.

Schedule

Session 1         June 30            work on chapters 1 and 2 together, work on chapter 3 at home

Session 2         July 7               work on chapters 4 and 5 together, work on chapter 6 at home

Session 3         July 14             work on chapter 7 together, work on chapter 8 at home

Session 4         July 21              work on chapters 9 and 10 together, work on chapter 11 at home

Session 5         July 28             work on chapters 12 and 13 together, work on chapter 15 at home

[skip chapter 14]

Session 6         August 4          work on chapters 16 and 17 together

Sign-up at the bulletin table this Sunday!

It’s Friday…But Sunday’s Comin’!

Happy Friday everyone!

Guys, please plan on joining us for the beginning of a new study in the Gospel of Mark tomorrow at 8AM at the Recios. Let Pastor Robert know if you are coming so we can be sure to have enough breakfast food and coffee on hand.

Vacation Bible School registration is now open. Please register online. Feel free to forward this link to friends or family who may also be interested in attending. We still need additional volunteers. Please contact Meredith LaBonte for additional information.

Please remember to bring in a pair or two of new children’s shoes for our shoe drive for International Christian Adoptions. All children’s sizes are needed. Our goal is 50 pairs of shoes. If you have any questions, please contact Mike DeWit.

We have a few prayer requests to pass along to you:

  • Izzy Avila’s dad is in the hospital after falling. He had brain hemorrhaging. The last few days have seen an improvement in his condition, but he may still be in a rehab center for up to six weeks. The doctors are also concerned about a low platelet count.
  • Catherine Chang’s mother is continuing to experience complications from the injury she suffered to her eye several weeks ago. The doctors in Singapore are now recommending surgery on the bones surrounding her eye.
  • Beth Burkhard’s sister Christine is home recovering from viral gastritis after being in the hospital for six days. Beth’s brother, Chris, had a mini-stroke recently that, combined with his diabetes, caused some vision loss. He is scheduled to have an MRI today.
  • Pray too for the folks in our church who are out of work, need better work, or need additional work to help make ends meet.

I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday!

In Christ,
Eric Landry
